When Your Mom Owns the Salon, You Listen: My Hair Shedding & Scalp Health Journey

Hey everyone, Chandler here 👋If you’ve been seeing more hair in your brush, more gathering in the shower drain, or just feeling like your scalp’s acting up — you’re not alone. I was in the exact same boat. My hair was shedding like crazy (yes, I mean handfuls every wash) and I was dealing with an irritated scalp on top of it all.
Fortunately I have a built-in expert in the fam — my mom (shout-out Cheryl), the owner of L’Elegance Salon, and after I admitted to her what was going on, she gave me a full reset on my hair care routine. Turns out, I was doing a lot of things that were making things worse.

Why Hair Shedding and Scalp Health Matter
Shedding and thinning aren’t always the same thing. A healthy hair growth cycle includes some natural shedding. [Happy Head+1] But when you start shedding noticeably more, or your scalp starts showing signs like irritation, dryness, or buildup, that’s when things shift from routine to something worth paying attention to. [Valley Skin Institute+1]
Your scalp is actually the foundation of healthy hair growth. If it’s clogged, irritated, or not getting enough blood flow, even the best products won’t perform at their best.
What I was doing wrong
Here’s the real talk: I was guilty of several habits that were working against my hair and scalp health.
Going to bed with wet hair.
Pulling my hair back tight in a bun when it was still damp.
Only washing a couple of times a week (thinking too much washing = bad).
Avoiding brushing because my hair is curly.
Skipping a second shampoo (yes, really).
These habits all contributed to my shedding, my scalp feeling off, and my hair just not performing how I knew it could.

The new routine that changed everything
After telling my mom what was up, she set me on a new path — and it actually made a difference in days! Here’s what I started doing:
Washing more consistently, not just “when I feel like it.”
Double-shampooing when needed, to help clear scalp buildup and give my roots some air.
Brushing gently, especially when conditioned, even though I have curls (yes, brushing can be okay if done right).
Blow-drying my hair before bed, instead of tight buns or tying it while wet.
Prioritizing scalp care — feeding it, keeping it clean, understanding that hair growth = scalp health.
And I’ve been texting my mom my “shedding progress pics” every other day just to stay accountable (yes, I’m serious).

The results (and why you might want this too)
The shedding slowed down. My scalp stopped feeling irritated. My hair felt stronger at the roots, lighter at the ends, healthier overall. If you’re dealing with seasonal shedding, postpartum changes, or just feel like your scalp is off, know you’re not alone — and you can make changes that help.
At L’Elegance Salon, they see this all the time, whether it’s tight hairstyles, sleeping with wet hair, or just a scalp that’s been ignored. The good news is: making better choices now paves the way for better hair later.

Takeaway: Healthy Scalp, Less Shedding, Happier Hair
Even the “Caso girls” deal with shedding 💛 But when your mom owns the salon and has decades of experience behind her — you listen.
If you’ve been noticing extra shedding, scalp issues, or just feel like your hair isn’t quite right, take a step back. Review your habits. Check your scalp. Then, commit to a routine that supports your hair, from the roots up. Your hair will thank you.
