Book the First or Last Appointment of the Day Booking a quieter time, either first thing in the morning or at the end of the day, can make a big difference. The salon is usually calmer, which helps kids feel more relaxed and gives your stylist a little extra flexibility and focus. 2. Book Your Haircut at the Same Time Children feel more comfortable when they see someone they trust going first. Booking your haircut together turns the experience into something fun and shared. Sit side by side or take turns. It helps model calm behavior and makes the whole thing feel less intimidating. 3. Bring a Comfort Item or Quiet Activity A small stuffed animal to hold, a favorite picture book, or a simple fidget toy can help your child stay still without becoming a distraction. Let’s set the record straight on five of the most common hair misconceptions we hear at the salon: 1. “Washing your hair every day is bad.” False! In reality, daily washing can be great for scalp health—especially if you’re using salon-quality products suited for your hair type. We’ve seen the damage caused by waiting too long between washes: buildup, irritation, and even hair loss. The myth that once-a-week washing is best doesn’t apply to everyone. 2. “Olaplex will fix all my hair problems.” Not exactly. Olaplex is a strong bond builder, but it’s often overused or misused as a fix for overprocessed hair. It’s not a magic cure-all—and in fact, frequent use can lead to further damage. If hair is lightened correctly in the first place, you shouldn’t need to rely on products to keep it from “holding on for dear life.” 3. “Updos hold better on dirty hair.” Nope. Please arrive with clean, dry hair for your updo appointment. Dirty hair won’t hold style well, can burn under heat tools due to oil buildup, and makes it harder for your stylist to do their best work. No pre-flat ironing either—it flattens out the cuticle and prevents curls from setting. Ask your stylist how to prep, or come in the day before for a wash and style. 4. “Don’t wash your hair before coloring.” Only partially true. One or two days without washing is fine—but if it’s been longer, that oil and buildup can block the color from properly penetrating. We recommend washing the night before your color appointment for the best results. Just avoid rough brushing or scrubbing your scalp the morning of—it can lead to irritation once color is applied. 5. “Hotter irons mean better hold.” Dangerously false. Cranking up the heat won’t make your style last longer—it’ll just burn your hair. Excessive heat damages the inner structure of the strand, making it harder to style and more likely to fall flat. Dirty brushes, clogged blowdryers, and gunked-up irons not only mess with your hair’s health and shine, but they can also shorten the life of your styling tools. Let’s break down why and how to clean your tools at home. Brushes + Combs Why: Hair, dust, and styling product can build up fast. If your brush or comb is dirty, you’re brushing clean hair with… not-so-clean tools. How to Clean Them: Remove hair with your fingers or a clean comb. Rinse with warm water. Lather with a gentle shampoo, scrub, and rinse well. Spray with rubbing alcohol to disinfect and let dry. At the salon, we use a professional-grade disinfectant called Barbicide —but for at-home use, this shampoo + alcohol method works great for personal tools. Blowdryers Why: Over time, lint, dust, and product get trapped in the filter. This can clog your dryer, make it overheat, and even shorten its lifespan. Plus, the added heat can increase the risk of damage to your hair. How to Clean It: Remove the filter (usually found on the back of the dryer). Rinse with warm water. Use a clean toothbrush and gentle soap to scrub away buildup. Rinse again and pat dry thoroughly before reattaching. Flat Irons + Curling Irons Why: When styling products burn onto your hot tools, they can leave residue that damages your hair and prevents even heating. How to Clean Them: Let your iron cool completely. Use an alcohol pad or cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol to gently wipe down the plates or barrel. Let dry before your next use.
